I Have Multiple Pets…Would Tile or Stone Flooring Be Best?

While it is certainly a more affordable option, many people are hesitant to go with carpeted flooring because it can wear quickly and it tends to absorb stains and odors very easily.  Likewise, hardwood flooring can scratch, stain, and absorb moisture, making it an impractical choice as well, even with a professional hardwood floor cleaning.  For this reason, many homeowners choose a stone or tile flooring option.

Stone flooring is an excellent choice for pet owners for a number of reasons.  For starters, it is very scratch resistant and any scratches that might occur are very difficult to notice.  In addition, it does not absorb moisture, making it very easy to clean up if your pets have an accident.  Similarly, it will not absorb odors, so you can keep your house smelling fresh and clean.  Granite is the best choice for a durable floor because it is the hardest of the natural stones.  However, softer stones such as marble, travertine, and slate are still good options, although they might require a bit more maintenance.

Much like stone flooring, tile flooring offers many of the same benefits including scratch resistance, durability, and odor and moisture control.  The main downside to stone and tile flooring is the fact that they are hard and cold, making for an uncomfortable place for pets to lie down.  However, this problem can easily be solved by using throw rugs or pet beds.

When choosing a flooring surface for your pets, you can’t go wrong with either stone or tile.  Both types of flooring offer great benefits for pets and are very durable surfaces.  The main difference will be in price and personal taste.  Both options are extremely suitable for pet owners.  Regardless of which flooring you choose, it is recommended that stone and tile flooring be professionally cleaned every 12-18 months to ensure they look their best and are clean.
