Why We Care
Chem-Dry owners tell their stories on why Cleaning for the Cause is personal to them in order to raise money for breast cancer programs and education.
When Betsy Shipman, owner of S & S Chem-Dry in South West Chicago, was just 11 years old, her grandmother passed away from breast cancer. “At the time, I didn’t understand what breast cancer was and never knew anyone else with breast cancer. I only knew it took my grandma from us.” S & S Chem-Dry joined the Cleaning for the Cause program to not only raise awareness, but to show their customers that Chem-Dry cares about them and their health. Matthew and Shannon Sapp, owners of Chem-Dry by the Emerald Coast, have been closely affected by breast cancer. Shannon just celebrated 12 years as a survivor of breast cancer! She was diagnosed with breast cancer September 29, 1999 and underwent a lumpectomy and radiation to combat the horrible disease. One of Shannon’s aunts and cousin died from breast cancer and another aunt is a survivor for 40 years. Matthew also has an aunt that is a 9 year survivor. They have many friends who are also survivors and many who have lost the battle against breast cancer. “I am especially excited for this program because I am alive today because of the breast cancer research that was done before I was diagnosed. Raising funds for this cause will only further that research and hopefully someday find a cure,” Shannon said. Breast cancer has affected Old Towne Chem-Dry’s owners Scott and Sara Gibbons. Sara’s mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 42 after finding a lump. After a successful mastectomy treatment, cancer hit again when she was diagnosed with colon cancer. Sara’s mom passed away two years later. Scott’s mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Annual mammograms and advancement in breast cancer research has left his mom cancer free! “We are excited to be apart of the Cleaning for the Cause program! We have experienced the difference early detection makes and want to help raise money so that more women can beat this dreadful disease.” To learn more about Old Towne Chem-Dry, call 618-659-9909 or visit oldtownechemdry.com.
Kathie Johnston, owner of Certified Chem-Dry in Salt Lake City, Utah, was personally touched by breast cancer when her grandmother was diagnosed with the disease while in her 80’s and had a double mastectomy. Her older sister also discovered she had breast cancer at her annual mammogram appointment. Because she discovered breast cancer in its early stages, she was able to fight it with a few radiation treatments and is now cancer free. Unlike Kathie’s sister, her aunt chose not to have mammograms and lost the fight against breast cancer because the disease had advanced so far and they were unable to save her. The Johnston’s and their Chem-Dry team hope to raise awareness, educate customers about breast cancer and help them learn what steps they can take to help others become more aware and fight the disease. Erika and Randy Herman of Cornerstone Chem-Dry like many others have been affected by breast cancer. Eleven years ago Erika’s aunt lost her battle with breast cancer and three years later her grandmother also lost her battle after fighting breast cancer twice. “My grandma was a fighter. Right after her chemo treatments she would go straight to one of her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was strong to the end.”To find out more about Cornerstone Chem-Dry, call 972-690-7272 or visit them on the web at www.co2cleaners.com
Paul Moen of Moen Chem-Dry has seen the terrible effects of breast cancer first hand. His brother’s wife’s sister battled breast cancer and at age 40 passed away. She was a single mother and left behind a physically and mentally challenged son as well as a family who never recovered from the grief. Paul’s brother’s wife, grieved with the death of her sister from breast cancer and mother from Alzheimer’s, all within a years time, took her own life in 2007. “Breast cancer destroys the human body and also reaps havoc on families, emotions, mental well-beings and the ability to live life to the fullest,” Paul said. “We at Moen Chem-Dry want to stomp out this ugly disease.” To learn more of Moen Chem-Dry call(843)-873-5288 or visit them on the web at http://www.chem-dry.net/moen.sc.
Barry Shatwell, owner of A-OK Chemdry in Algonquin, Illinois, went with his wife to the doctor when she discovered a lump in her breast and soon heard the words no one wants to hear, “You have breast cancer.” Barry sat there unable to comprehend how the universe had just changed. Barry and his wife took a proactive approach, trying numerous procedures and medications, but the cancer spread. Barry’s wife lasted a year, dying two days before their 35th wedding anniversary. Barry passionately fundraises through Chem-Dry’s Cleaning for the Cause campaign because, as he learned, breast cancer doesn't just attack an individual...it devastates an entire family.
